What is the Robert A. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Robert A. Davis (RAD) Memorial Fund is an academic scholarship named in honor of Sp4, PFC Robert A. Davis, “Bobby”, the first from Chester County, Pennsylvania to be fatally wounded, in action, in Vietnam.  The fund represents Bobby’s love and dedication to family, nature, science and the business of farming. The Scholarship Application tab above will provide more information. Our RAD Scholars are also featured in both the Gallery and under News & Events.

Who Is - Sp4, PFC Robert “Bobby” A. Davis?

A humble young man of incredible character, Bobby was drafted to serve in the Vietnam Conflict. While under continual attack by a larger enemy force, Bobby repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to keep his unit from becoming overrun. On November 15, 1965, right before his 25th birthday, he gave his life protecting his comrades. His battle in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam, called “The Valley of Death”, is a battle that captured national attention and changed the trajectory of the Vietnam War.  Bobby received many honors posthumously, and is noted in both the book, “We Were Soldiers Once….and Young” and the acclaimed film, “We Were Soldiers”. A decorated hero, Bobby received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor, and many other honors. His citation for the Bronze Star reads: “This outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty and personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon Spec. 4 Davis, his unit, and the United States Army.”

As a note to Bobby’s story, his brother PFC Blair H. Davis was drafted and serving in Saigon, Vietnam at the same time. Simultaneously, a third brother, PFC Gilbert M. Davis was also drafted and headed for Vietnam. But, by the grace of God, and the pleading of their mother in her appeal to President Lyndon B. Johnson, he was diverted to Italy. Gold Star Mother Viola S. Davis proclaimed, “…you will not take another of my boys to this war zone…”. The Davis family, Bobby’s friends, and those that have never met him, remember his story. We are pleased to share it through this website.

What better way to celebrate Bobby’s immortal legacy than to endow a scholarship in his honor. We hope you will tap the Donate Now button above to make a tax-deductible contribution to RAD Memorial Scholarship Fund or contact us to see how you can become involved. Thank you!
